Foucault and Marcuse

Michel FoucaultI have been working on a paper about some of the high-level philosophical thoughts of Michel Foucault and Herbert Marcuse. Foucault's concept of discipline and punishment, in light of power residing within a judge of normality, and Marcuse's work of repressive tolerance and how tolerance often represses diversity rather than increases and supports it.

Both of these thinkers have struck me recently, and I am now just trying to understand them enough to be able to explain their contributions. Herbert MarcuseI have read some of both of their works, and will have to read and re-read them more, since on the surface they are both easy, yet their words in fact challenge much of our contemporary  society.

There will be many sleepless nights. I recommend a good cup of coffee and always re-evaluate their assertions. It is not only the thoughts that counts this time around but the honest to goodness application. "Nothingness" is a beginning as we are all shackled by our upbringing... hippies aside!!
Value judgement is important especially when easy says are not easily lived. Philo speak is not detached from socio-economic situations i.e. moments in time and therefore need to be re-evaluated for its sense of purpose (impetus). The hard part is its universal application vs. new emerging sources such as the rise of 3rd world countries like India and China and how this will shape our perception moving forward.... Good Luck.
